Conversations with My Kids

My kiddos

Let’s start with the little one.  Our two year old (two and a HALF, as I’m often corrected), Oliver, understands just about everything we say, but he’s a (little) man of little word.  Until recently. Don’t get me wrong, there’s mom, mommy, dad, sister (pronounced by Ollie as “tsi-tser”, good Chinese “ts” pronunciation)… mine and “I DO IT!!”. We’ve just been having some interesting conversations. He’s been saying things like, “Nice day, Mom.” and “Nice eat (lunch at a restaurant).”  Then there’s the occasional, “Why you push me, Sister?!

At the grocery store, Ollie saw a package of pancake mix.

MOM! Pan…cakes! Pancakes, mom make!

“Really?  Cool!  You like Mommy’s pancakes?”

Yah… bes… eff-er! (grin)”

“Did you say, “Best ever,” Ollie?”

YAH! Bes-t ev-er.”

Wow.  It seems he’s referring to food with “best ever”, like the other night it was the “best ever” chocolate milk.

With our seven (going-on-fourteen) year old, we’re already having those conversations after school that go like this:

“How was your day?”

Fine.

“What did you do at school, anything fun or different?”

No. Same stuff.”

Ugh. I didn’t think it would be like this so soon, but we do have our good conversations from time to time. Abby really likes mystery books, spy-themed short novels, and she likes superheroes… or people with special powers. So, she asked me what sort of super power would I like to have, if I could have one.  I said, “Oh, man, that’s tough. There’s so many to choose from.”  She said, “Mom, if I could have a secret power, I would clean up the house by snapping my fingers so you don’t have to do everything and you can play with me.” Aww…

That was such a bittersweet answer. I know a toddler does monopolize a mom’s time, but as patient as she is… an “Abby” day is long overdue.

Weekend in Chicago

Two weekends ago, we took a small stay-cation and enjoyed our fabulous city.  Without kids!

It was so nice to sleep in, have coffee, walk around the Art Institute and the Magnificent Mile.  We browsed through stores we really had no business stepping into, but it’s fun to look.  The Art Institute is so incredibly inspiring!  I love Monet’s paintings (as in the movie Thomas Crown Affair, “I like my haystacks, Bobby.”), but it’s the historical and architectural artifacts that draw me.  I could spend hours looking and studying the details.  I took so many pictures (probably too many), and we’re thinking of enlarging, framing and hanging them in our home.

Appetizers: Eno at the Intercontinental Hotel.  A wine, cheese and chocolate bar.  I didn’t try the chocolate covered bacon.  We’ll be visiting again, so there will be a next time.

Nice sushi dinner at Aria, but I think we both agree that we’ve enjoyed other restaurants more.  Otherwise, it was a weekend we definitely needed.  Thanks sis-in-law and sis-in-law’s fiance for staying with the kids!

Home questions…

So, if you frequently read the Chicago Tribune homes section on Sunday, you’ll find these interviews of designers, celebrities, or whomever the editors are interested in at the time. I get a kick out of them, personally.

What item in your home shouts “Julie Tiu lives here!” That might have to be some of the architectural elements in the home, like the newel posts at the staircase which I love, or the front door. But then, maybe it’s the crazy artsy mess in the basement.

One thing on your nightstand: A Midwest Living magazine

One thing you have in your house from your childhood: I have lots of things, let’s face it, I’m sort of a pack rat. But, I’m glad to have my Little Golden Books from when I was 6, and now Abby and Ollie can read and enjoy them.

Three things we’d find under your bed: Dust, plastic storage with some of Abby’s drawings, plastic storage with seasonal clothing.

Most high-tech gadget or appliance in your home: Maybe the iMac?

If you had to save one “thing” from your home, what would it be? That’s a terrible thought! Might be the external hard drive with our recent family pictures.

What’s the biggest collection in your home? We have some nice art pieces: pottery, glass, framed art.

What reading material would we find in your bathroom? Who reads in the bathroom?

Most embarrassing thing in your home that you hide when guests come over: I usually move the clothes pile (that sits on a chair in our bedroom) into the closet.

If we came unexpectedly, would we find your bed made-or not made? That would depend, but today, it’s made.

Best furniture bargain you ever got: That would have to be the buffet in our dining room. It was part of a larger dining set I bought at an estate sale. (See: http://tinybungalow.blogspot.com/2008/07/another-friends-home.html)

Biggest surprise we’d find in your closet: I still have my denim (handmade) jacket from when I was 12.

Do you hang the toilet paper over the front or down the back? Over the front.

What CD would we find in your player (or artist on your iPod) right now? I don’t actually own an iPod, it’s Eastman’s. In the car I have ABBA – Disc 3 from the box set. (Yeah, I’m not ashamed to say it!)

Where do you feel most creative in your home? Calmest? Creative – anywhere. Calmest – lounging on the couch, which usually doesn’t happen for very long.
