Ode to My Other Life: Construction Management and Estimating

This is a departure from the crafting, the cooking, the child-rearing, the housekeeping… and maybe I’ve mentioned it only a few times. My background is in civil engineering (some may not believe this) and after college, I worked for only one company for eleven years (rarity nowadays) but was fortunate to wear many hats. I’ve been a field/project  engineer, assistant project manager, and at the time I opted out, I was an estimator. Actually, my business card read: Senior Cost Analyst.

Reviewing blueprints, meeting with developers, trying to figure out how to get their projects within a reasonable budget, meeting with manufacturer representatives, architects and contractors to orchestrate a project – I loved it, loved the people I worked with (most of them, hehe) and for. What I loved most was walking through a building as it was being built and seeing the 3-D version of what I’d been studying and budgeting. Sounds idealistic, doesn’t it? The stress, I could leave behind, and I did – just traded it for other stress. Seems like many years ago, but it’s only been a little over 3 years. My notes from a project meeting looks so foreign to me right now…

Every once in a blue moon, I make a night out by attending a dinner meeting with a professional organization I used to belong to, National Assocation of Women in Construction, NAWIC (pronounced NAY-WICK). There are chapters all over the nation – two in the Chicago area and two in the far north and northwest regions of llinois. I coordinate meetings for one of the chapters and seemingly, it’s working out well. I’m a bit removed from the construction industry but have been pretty successful with keeping in touch with colleagues from my other life and some of them have become good friends.

The beauty of dining with these women and sitting in on the meetings is inspiration for me. Most evenings there is a guest speaker, someone from the industry, who might talk about a current project, hot topic in construction, or sometimes new construction materials. Recently, the dinner topic was to showcase your company, your role in the company and how it relates to NAWIC. These women meet every month and people know what firms they work for, but sometimes, you forget what people do on a daily basis.

It was completely refreshing to hear stories from the trenches. There were fun ones: I met a woman who managed projects at O’Hare Airport and whose voice is used in a few public announcements (think: Thank you for not smoking)! And, some stories not so fun… in 2010, there is still a sense of “the old boys club”. I recall going to a few meetings myself where there might have been 50-75 people and 2 women. Personally, I almost always used those circumstances as my opportunity to be memorable, but you have to be able to roll with the punches and maintain a sense of decorum amidst alcoholic-influenced people.

In NAWIC you see the encouragement and support for those struggling with difficult personalities or just the rough economy, and yes, people are trying to get work anywhere. People are losing jobs or getting hours cut and there’s little building to go around right now. Interestingly enough, there’s been some buzz in the insurance world regarding project inquiry in Chicago and apparently the same thing happened in Texas when George W. took office back in early 00’s. Perhaps there’s hope for the 10’s.

Sure, listening to these women showcasing their employers or their own companies made me miss the “ol’ days”, but really, I appreciate my former employers and the opportunities I had even more and I have a great deal of admiration for my talented, goal-oriented, multi-tasking, feisty, business-savvy “construction sisters”.

Cleaning out the Closet and a Drawer

We have a giant front closet in our foyer, and I’ll admit, it’s long overdue for a little better organization. I think I cleaned it out over one year ago. Before I knew it, the coats had somehow magically multiplied with hand-me-downs and seasonal additions. I was sad that there was hardly any room for guest coats.

So, a little trip to IKEA (we love it there), a few purchases and time to sort…

…and voila! There were so many coats and sweatshirts that weren’t being worn because 1) they’re too small, 2) they’re too big or 3) they don’t belong to us. A few things have since found new homes and other things are being packed away for future use. We’re planning on converting a lot of our clothes hangers to wooden ones, just a little at a time.

Think our dry cleaner will be happy with my little hanger donation? The plastic ones will find a home in the laundry room in the meantime.

Onward to the kitchen where you’d think we might keep our plates in the top cabinets… nope, not us. For accessibility sake, we have our plates in the drawers below where pots and pans are sometimes stored.

I had bought four of these plate holders three years ago, but was short two. I just kept forgetting to buy them over the last few years.

Kiddie plates just stack with everything. I love, love, love these holders. Minimal or no assembly, plates don’t rattle, they all have their places. It’s awesome.

(FYI: I have not been paid, given product by, or asked by IKEA to advertise or “plug” their products. This is simply a post about products we like.)

Welcoming Winter 2010

Late last week we were greeted by some snow… like 12 inches of snow. So, I got out like a good wife and shoveled the driveway with a little help.

At first he just wanted to stamp rectangles all over the place…

but then he insisted on driving his car instead of shoveling or making snowballs (it wasn’t very good packing snow anyway).

Hey, Mom!

He said, “Mom, move the snow in fw-ont of mine car so I can roll it!” Then he’d call me for help because his car was stuck and he wanted to “go to work”.

Time to “come home”…

I had a quick minute in between pleas for getting inside for hot chocolate to take a couple of pictures of the rose bushes I neglected to cut down in the fall. Actually, I’m pretty happy that I didn’t. The color is beautiful…

Designing gift tags and Chinese New Year cards

Color, pattern, texture, shine…So simple and brilliant. It’s my favorite design rule, and I’m still learning (since I’m not even close to having studied art design). The best part is it works for putting together an outfit, a room, a gift tag?! Actually, it didn’t start out that way, but when I looked at the final products it sort of jumped out at me: red, lots of patterns that give off lots of texture and the tag is shiny. Last week, I was scribbling and working on the last of this series of five when I accidentally spilled my tea on them. Ugh. After some quick blots and a night sandwiched in paper towel and phone book pages, they survived with little water scarring. Sharpies are awesome.

These tags were meant to be maybe a first offering on Etsy… maybe…with Valentine’s Day and all. But, with the slight water damage, I wouldn’t feel right about selling them. So, I started on some other ones. The third from the left isn’t quite done. Then I tried one with the new Copic Multiliners; that one smudged.

While I took a small break from putting away Christmas decorations, I started thinking about Chinese New Year, the next holiday we’ll be celebrating in this house. (I have Holiday A.D.D.) There are these Chinese zodiac rubber stamps and a variety of Asian themed stamps I want to use.

Let’s see how this pans out over the next week or so. I should have some time to work on them with the big snowstorm and freezing temperatures coming our way.

A few ornaments to put away

What better way to start the new year than with family and friends? It’s a Filipino tradition to celebrate the life of a loved one on the 40th day after his or her passing. So, my dad’s youngest sister and her family hosted a memorial service and reception in honor of my aunt and uncle who recently passed away (They were my dad’s siblings. Big family, gets confusing, I know: my dad is 1 of 14). It was so heartwarming to have so many friends and extended family come out the day after the New Year; so many I haven’t seen in a long while, so many new babies. My Auntie Tess and Uncle Fred would’ve loved the party so much.

Auntie Con and Uncle Wilmer are fantastic hosts who had more than enough food to feed the 50-60 people who attended, but I like help out, so from our home we brought my husband’s signature crab dip and my fruit cocktail cake. Normally, I’d bake it in a 13×9 pan, but for Christmas, I got the “Big Top Cupcake” in our cousin gift exchange. Yeah, “As Seen on TV” bakeware!

We could not stop laughing, and yet, it’s proved to be useful. I’ve never baked with silicone molds before. It was so easy to get the cake out, and washing was a breeze. The only thing that didn’t work as well was the “insert mold”, that little bowl shape piece on the right in the picture. I placed it on the bottom mold, just like a lid and it snapped on just fine. Seemed secure, but in the middle of baking it came off as the cake rose. It wasn’t a big deal though. I just kept pushing it down when I checked on the cake. Baking time increased just a little bit, too. I was surprised when the “cupcake top” wasn’t done when the bottom part was – I just had to add a few more minutes. I didn’t get all crazy with decorating the cake. There was no time, and I had no butter left in my house. But, all is good with a little dusting of powdered sugar and a gumdrop.

Fruit Cocktail Cake with Vanilla Pudding

Cake
1 pkg. yellow or lemon cake mix (with pudding)
16 oz. can fruit cocktail including syrup
1 cup flaked coconut
4 eggs
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Whipped topping (optional)

Butter Glaze:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1-1/3 c. flaked coconut

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Blend cake mix, fruit cocktail, coconut, eggs and oil in large bowl. Beat at medium speed until smooth. Pour into 13×9 pan. Sprinkle brown sugar (and nuts). Bake for 45 min. or until toothpick comes clean from center. Spoon glaze over warm cake, approx. 15 min. after removing from oven. Serve warm or cold with whipped topping.

Butter glaze: Heat butter, sugar and evaporated milk in a saucepan until it reaches a low boil. Cook for 2 min. Remove from heat and stir in coconut.

Hunkering down with new toys

We’re having fun with family in town, visiting relatives and friends who have come home for the holidays, hosting family and friends at our home, not to mention playing with new toys (Santa brought me Copic Markers!!!) It’s been a whirlwind of activity, and so there hasn’t been too much time to write.
