30 Days of Creativity – Day 15: New Ideas List

Day 15: Do you like to try new things?  What about trying to do something new you like or dislike?

I absolutely love learning about new things. Trying new things? That might depend, but I’d like to think that I would at least give it a chance. I’m not much of an outdoor, athletic person, so those types of activities would definitely be more challenging. Hmm. Then maybe I should try more of that? Something to ponder…

Here is a list of five (though there are more) things I’d like to try to do by the end of the year. Is it bad that three of the five things are food-related?

What about some of you out there? Maybe we can support each other!

30 Days of Creativity – Day 14: Farewell Gifts

Day 14: Make something to give away.  Send a card to a friend or make a little gift for someone you care about.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been busy making a few things to give away. It’s just that time of year: end-of-school, graduation parties, summer birthdays, etc. And, I have all these ideas and inspiration, but there’s just never enough time. For my daughter’s teacher who is retiring, the class wrote letters of gratitude (or poems and just goodbyes). I put their little works of art together with pictures from school parties and their last field trip.

Over the weekend, we also hosted a going-away party for my sister-in-law and her husband who are moving out to the West Coast. *sad face* Really, we are so proud and excited for them. We will miss them so much… thank goodness for video chatting. So, a few friends and family came over, we laughed, we feasted on some favorite foods and bid them farewell. The thing about going away parties (I don’t like saying “goodbye”.), it’s all about spending time with your family and your pals. You could go nuts with decoration or theme, and I might have if there were more time. We just pulled together a few things. My daughter and I wrote cute messages on some vellum that we embossed, then we taped them to some glass jars for homespun hurricane jars.

And for our guests, something to conjure up Washington (state): some Starbuck’s to go, a copy of a vintage downtown Seattle postcard, and my sister and brother-in-law’s new address.

How would you prepare for a farewell party? Share some website loves in the comments!

30 Days of Creativity – Day 13: Mixed media

Day 13: Try something new!  Play today with a new form of art or craft!

Not long ago I reviewed some pretty cool art supplies for Craft Critique and made this mixed media mini-scroll (rubber stamping on fabric). I have to say, those gelatos are super fun to use! And even though mixed media artwork (artwork in which different materials are used) might not be new, it’s a form I haven’t explored in a very long time.

30 Days of Creativity – Day 12: Lunch

Day 12: Look at a child.  See how connected they are to their creative self?  Pretend you are a child and make something.

I meant to draw something, but it’ll have to wait. Lunch through the eyes of a child… playing with food. Who doesn’t like fun food? Credit to Meet the Dubiens for the inspiration!

We had a playdate a while ago…

PB & J sandwich with apple and raisin eyes, and a little carrot beak…. atop a chip nest because, the kids wouldn’t eat a “tree” made with cucumber circles and pretzels sticks.

Hot dog “samples” were requested. It’s just more fun with DIY flagged toothpicks which I had extras sitting in a drawer from my sister-in-law’s bridal shower.

30 Days of Creativity – Day 11: Noticing

Day 11: Stop and look around you.  There is something in this room you’ve never noticed before. What is it?

There’s a little corner in our living room that often gets neglected or just unnoticed. Usually we have an end table and a pile of library books on the floor. Lots of sun comes pouring into this corner too… well, when it’s a sunny day, which has been far and few between this Spring. On this particular day, the kids have made a little tent, their little fortress. The perfect little nook for some imaginative play… I love that. And, I guess it’s not that I’ve never noticed this corner before, it’s that there’s a lot of fun, creative play in this space.

What space are you in right now? What do you notice?

30 Days of Creativity: Day 10 with Crepe Paper Flower Tutorial

Day 10: Create something today inspired by nature!

We had a few days of fantastic weather, but over the last few days, it’s been cold, damp and gloomy. April showers bring May flowers, right? Well, I thought I’d make my own with some party streamers from our stash of supplies. They’re easy and fairly quick to make!

Supplies: Party streamers, pair of scissors and/or Martha Stewart fringe scissors

  1. Cut 6″ lengths of one color for the center of the flower, then cut 36″-40″ lengths for the main color of the flower.
  2. Using your fringe scissors or regular scissor, cut fringe about 2/3 of the streamer width. Crepe paper is delicate and difficult to work with. I found using regular scissors was quicker than the fringe scissors, but I like the texture of the fringe scissor cut better. If you cut the streamer from bottom up, you may have an easier time.
  3. After cutting the fringe, roll the inner section then add the outer section. Keep rolling until complete.

For a little variation, I like layering two colors.

To finish them off, use floral tape or a little glue. You can either make into flowers with thick floral wire or even bamboo skewers. I strung them on some covered wire…

Happy crepe paper flowers from party streamers

Happy Spring!
