Too much water

It’s been a busy summer already, and I haven’t made time to consistently blog. Not only that, but a week ago, we had this crazy rainfall that flooded much of the town we live in. Thank goodness we didn’t get any seepage in the basement, but my husband’s parents did… again. We live about 2 miles north of them, and they took in about 7″ or 8″ inches of water in the basement, and then the power went out. No sump pump, no air conditioning. Not fun. Oh, did I mention it was sweltering that day? And, it’s been 90 degrees or more this past week, too? The in-laws have been camping out at our place in the evenings.

We were concerned that we might get some water in the house. The gutters were overflowing (as seen above) and there was a nice pool of water by our back door. I was afraid it would breach the foundation, or the door seal, or something? You never know where water will get into. But, we were safe… we just have to watch out for all the mosquitos from all the standing water everywhere. Yuck.

So, with things settling down, I’ll be back with more food, crafts and adventures.

New mahjong player in town

(My 50th post… should I celebrate?)

The kids really enjoy when we’re all together and the mahjong tiles come out. The little one is getting into it. I’m sure generations of my husband’s family have played and handed down the rules, etc. I never quite understood the game as played by Filipinos, but when I watched and learned from my husband, it became much simpler. The Chinese (family) rules are much more complex than the Filipino version. Don’t ask about Hong Kong style. I hear it’s a whole other level.

Personally, I haven’t played in a while, and I still can’t score my own points. I’m usually the one at the table saying, “Just tell me how many points I have… I trust you.” Basically, I’m intimidated to play with my in-laws and I was never really up on strategy games either. I get stressed out especially when someone’s standing behind you saying, “Oh, why did you pick that tile?” or “Oh, don’t give up that tile…” Worse than backseat drivers.

Learning mahjong from the best

They play on a homemade, custom table top that goes over a regular card table: Plywood, 1x material, felt and window screening. Tiles move around like butter. My family borrowed it and really liked it. So, Husband got material from a friend, who in turn pre-cut and routed all the material for us. Husband took friend out for breakfast.

Here’s the new table top for my aunt and uncle. I think the red felt behind the screen material is great!

The backside of the table top is much neater than ours, of course, this is the 3rd one my husband has made with our soon-to-be brother-in-law. Lightweight staple gun with staples less than 1/2″ does the trick.

Close up of fine “Chinese craftsmanship”… tiles don’t fall off the table because of the frame.

Could this be a “cottage industry” sort of product? How much would mahjong players be willing to pay for this?

Tales from the outside

One month ago… rose bushes coming out of winter, serviceberry trees and chanticleer pear tree in bloom.

A friend helped us with a trouble spot by transplanting some hostas.

Looks like this now…

And what is up with our phlox? One side is great, while the other side is practically dead. I’ve been told that it has to do with water. The full bunch is sort of landlocked and has tons of water. Not so good for the serviceberry, but it’s acclimated, I think.

And, from the backyard, a flower from our containers…

…and a garden project. Amazing what a little patina finish can do on a terra cotta pot. I would write more about the backyard, except that the rabbits have eaten a bunch of the hostas. It looks quite sad.

Happy grocery shopper

Grocery Savings

So, I cut coupons. I shop the sales. I subscribe to Grocery Game.com (thank you, Heather). You feel like you beat the system somehow.  Here’s a post from last year. (For my family, who might be reading, just click on the underlined word “here’s”.)

Today, not only did I beat my record, I had the strangest encounter at the grocery store that I frequently visit. The cashier seemed really irritated with all my coupons; she is also not the cashier I regularly “visit”. I like that I have a “favorite” cashier, and certain check-out lines we like to go to. Maybe she was having a bad day, but here I was, just looking to pay for my goods and there she was telling me (with an angry European accent), “You have too many coupons…” Then she continues to say something to the affect that I’m practically paying nothing… and sounding mad?! That’s right, lady! And I’m proud of it. Hey, mind your business, scan them in and get me out of here. Why are you getting upset with my shopping habits?

Sometimes, during the car ride home, I’ll calculate in my head how much I saved, but I waited until I could sit with a calculator this time. Retail cost: $112. I paid about $62 and some change. 43% savings, hooray! I had $23 in cut coupons, and another $26 in “store savings” like those preferred card deals, buy 1/get 1, and non-advertised price drops. I only wish I had my coupon organizer with me, because I would’ve bought more… lots of non-advertised deals/price drops/clearance deals for the next week.

Anyhow, things I got for free: 2 boxes of Wheat Thins-Artisan, 24 oz. Hunt’s ketchup, Wholly Salsa, 1 lb. Italian Sausage, bag of Tostito scoops, Breyer’s Ice Cream, Soft Scrub liquid cleaner

Mother’s Day 2009

Breakfast in bed has become tradition in our house. No, I did not eat all that bacon. We all ate in bed, so, yes, the sheets were taken off immediately after breakfast.

Breakfast in Bed...mmm, Bacon

Toast, bacon, an ambrosia-ish salad, raspberry jam, Kerrygold butter (so good), a blob of Delice de Bourgogne cheese (even more delicious), Burnside Estate (black tea) from TeaLula and Ollie-friendly blueberry granola.  Eastman outdid himself this time.

Scrambled Eggs with Cajun Seasoning

Cajun-seasoned scrambled eggs were hiding under the plate o’ bacon.

New Books to Read

So excited to start reading these books!! But, best of all, Abby made a most beautiful stained “glass” picture of a flower and did a survey on Mom.

Crafting progress

It’s April 29. I don’t think I’m going to make the April 30 deadline for the projects I wrote about here, but I’m happy to say I’ve finished “prep stage 1” for the T-shirt quilt. I had way more than 9 shirts left to interface, and it definitely takes time.

I brought my ironing board upstairs so I could watch old Schoolhouse Rock videos on You Tube with Ollie while I busted my tail trying to iron as fast as I could. Now I have the Adjective Song in my head. “He was a hairy bear, he was a scary bear, we made a hasty retreat from his lair… and described him with adjectives.” I love that song. Apparently, Ollie does too, he watched it about 10 times in a row.

The wine cork board is in disarray. I didn’t set baselines, and my rows started tilting towards the left. Voices in my head kept saying, “What would Martha (Stewart) do?” Of course, she’d start over, and so did I. I’m insane. As for the baby burp cloths, the fabric and ribbons are all cut. While Ollie took apart the couch after lunch, I ironed and pinned. I still might be able to finish sewing the burp cloths by the weekend.
