If you’re like me, and life is moving at the speed of light, you’ve realized that you have yet to make a Mother’s Day card. I’ve actually worked ahead and have my mom’s gift ready… personal shadowboxes which I’ll have to share after the fact because I never know when she’ll be reading this!

Here are some great links to last-minute Mother’s Day Cards. If you have anymore links, please feel free to share in the comments! Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Holiday Party Planning for a Cookie Exchange

I honestly try to enjoy Fall for what it is – the transitioning into winter, the falling leaves, late gardening, the colors, pumpkins, costumes, giving thanks. I LOVE Fall, which is probably also why I make myself feel guilty for even slightly thinking about Christmas and winter. This is the time of year I get myself mentally, physically and emotionally charged up for the barrage of Christmas and holiday events including the ones we host here at the Tiu homestead.

Cream Cheese Mango pinwheels

For the last nine years (minus the one when we were building the house) we’ve invited close friends mainly from high school and college to a cookie exchange. It started out innocently, as most things do: Six households probably no more than 12 people. Last year we hosted about 60 people including children, 20 households. It marks the Christmas season for us as we open our home to friends, and it’s the most incredible display of cookie baking, not to mention cameraderie and even a little friendly competition. Each home brought 6 dozen cookies to share and went home with just about the same amount. This Facebook album link is a doorway to our cookie madness that we love so dearly.

One more thing I’d like to share as a free download.  It’s my trusty party planning spreadsheet. You type in the date of your party and the spreadsheet fills with start and end dates for different tasks. There’s also a worksheet that will calculate food quantities. It’s in MSExcel for Windows, and you can use it for other types of parties. I’ve used it for bridal showers, dinner parties, brunches, simple gatherings. But, this one is written with our holiday cookie exchange in mind.

Instant Coffee anyone?

Taster's Choice

I invited Eastman to be a guest blogger one of these days, because I think he’d do a really funny (and fine) job.  Abby would be fun to have on, too, for that matter.  Anyhow, the idea crossed my mind because today we received a little single serve sample of Nescafe Taster’s Choice with the Sunday paper.  Eastman has been drinking and enjoying Starbucks Via at work.  Taster’s Choice WAS instant before Starbuck’s, right? So, he gave it a whirl, and I asked him how it was.  Remember, the tagline was something like “Costs 4x less than Starbucks.”

He said, “Yeah, not that good, unfortunately it tastes like it.”  After I had a sip the words “burned coffee” crossed my mind.  So, if you’re into that, you can go here for a free sample.

Returning to Paper

I really wanted to make some cards for Valentine’s Day. I had been focusing on sewing through the holidays that I thought I’d take a break from fabric and get back to my crafting roots, so to speak!

img_1385Made a bunch of gift tags to get started. I might just make these my first offering on etsy.com. I just haven’t pulled the trigger on my online store.

Then I reached for a book I bought a year ago that Abby and I like. Lots of fun things if you’re patient enough to do it. It comes with templates, paper, little wire hangers… not sure what possessed me to start my little project of paper cuttings. Maybe it’s just me trying to fulfill my childhood fantasy of becoming a fashion designer! Ha! I couldn’t draw a person to save my life! This is also where the toy “Fashion Plates” comes in. Girls, you know… the plastic plates you match up with a head, blouse and bottom, then you rub with a pencil to create your fashion model. We digress. That’ll be another blog.

So here, I’ll stop talking a little bit and show you my paper accessory factory. This…

…became this.

Here’s a close up of one of the cards. They’re all slightly different.

They are also being sent out to some lovely friends, but I’ll try to upload something so you can print some at home for some last minute Valentine’s cards!

Not sure if it’s going to work out, but we’ll try!

Hopefully you can open on your home computer, crop as needed and print on some glossy photo paper and stick on some cardstock. Or maybe you can print right onto the cardstock! Enjoy!

(ps: haven’t figured out what happened with my picture justifications? centered, left, etc…)
