Labor Day Crafts: A Few Projects to Do

red, white and blue nails – patriotic?

My kids had no idea what Labor Day is all about, even though I’m sure I remind them (more than once a year) that through hard work lots of people help make the world a better place.

(And moms, parents, we know we all work hard… like 24/7.) So a special cheers to virtual friends and digital moms everywhere who share their love of crafting, cooking and homemaking while running around all over the place with kids… hoping to craft in my house today after some computer work and chores.

A New Year, a Clean Slate and Thank You

Happy 2012 from our home to yours! How were your holidays and New Year? We were blessed with a wonderful break – gatherings with family and friends, awesome houseguests, many mornings of sleeping in, crazy eruptions of laughter in the house and constant eating. We all put on a few pounds, I think. (Among visiting Chicago favorites, we tried a new place, Slurping Turtle – yummy!)

Amazingly, my brother-in-law didn’t have to shovel our driveways and walks – not once this break (Merry Christmas, bro!). But it did make for a weird Christmas according to my little one (Where’s the snow? I want to eat snow, but not yellow snow.).

Every year, I marvel at how quickly time seems to pass. I think about what we’ve done over the year, remember people who’ve touched our lives. And, I quietly make resolutions for myself – mainly personal improvement things to enrich my family life. I’ve only shared one simple resolution on the So This is Julie Facebook page… to finish more projects than start. If you know me, I’m forever dreaming up things to do. And while my Pinterest boards show all my “someday” projects, I feel like I need to teach my kids about completing projects, too. I love that they know their mom is a crafty nut.

I’m totally excited for 2012 and all the sewing, papercrafting and cooking ahead of us. Thank you for reading along, all the comments and support… health, happiness and peace!

30 Days of Creativity – Day 11: Noticing

Day 11: Stop and look around you.  There is something in this room you’ve never noticed before. What is it?

There’s a little corner in our living room that often gets neglected or just unnoticed. Usually we have an end table and a pile of library books on the floor. Lots of sun comes pouring into this corner too… well, when it’s a sunny day, which has been far and few between this Spring. On this particular day, the kids have made a little tent, their little fortress. The perfect little nook for some imaginative play… I love that. And, I guess it’s not that I’ve never noticed this corner before, it’s that there’s a lot of fun, creative play in this space.

What space are you in right now? What do you notice?

30 Days of Creativity: Day 6 and 7

How does your living space reflect your creative nature?  Share a picture if you can!

I love our home with its strong architectural style… it sets a nice foundation in itself for being surrounded by art. And, like lots of parents, we like hanging up the kiddie art. Ours are along the stairs heading down to the basement. Some adorn the cabinets in our kitchen. Over the years, my husband and I have picked up bits of art on vacations or from local artists…we like showcasing them around our home. Hanging in our dining room are lithograph plates with Andy Warhol’s famous daisy. We’ve also collected some pottery reminiscent of the Arts & Crafts period and blown glass pieces by Robert Fritz (we’re blessed to call him a friend). Count those with some framed black and white architectural photographs, and framed art along our entryway… creative moments are everywhere in our home.

Relax!  Do you relax to create or create to relax?

For me, it’s like two sides of the same coin. But, sometimes, if I’m writing an article with an actual deadline, it can be a little stressful, especially when crafting equipment break.

Reading Lonny Mag

Am I the last person to know that some of the staff of Domino Magazine went and started Lonny Mag? Happy, happy, happy… I’m excited to be able to thumb through this decorating mini-bible.

I kept my last year of Domino magazines tucked away in a basket, but seriously, I do thumb through them from time to time, looking for bits of inspiration for home, for design ideas when I craft to entertaining… and how disappointed was I when they stopped publishing.

Thanks, Lonny Mag, for resurrecting some beautiful work!
